Chelsea look set to land Leipzig goal-getter Timo Werner this summer.

Frank Lampard applauds Chelsea fans from the pitcy

There were howls of derision from some Chelsea fans when Frank Lampard failed to add to the squad in January’s transfer window, but the Blues are all set to splash the cash this summer.

Having had their transfer ban overturned, many expected Chelsea to strengthen their ranks with big name signings at the start of the year, as they battle to finish in the top four, for which they are 20/33* with MansionBet.

But Lampard and co are set to make the rest of the Premier League sit up and take notice, with the Londoners on the verge of signing German international striker Timo Werner.

Werner Linked with Many of Europe’s Best

The RB Leipzig forward, who has bagged 25 Bundesliga goals so far this term, has been linked with several of Europe’s top clubs since January. Liverpool were understood to be leading the race to sign Werner, but Chelsea look to have now stolen a march on their rivals.

The Merseysiders are believed to have baulked at the release-clause figure in the 24-year-old’s contract, said to be around £54million.

Having sold Eden Hazard to Real Madrid for over £100million last summer, Chelsea are happy to meet the asking price and need to strengthen their attacking options.

Since the Bundesliga returned in May, Werner has scored four goals in four games – which includes a hat-trick in Leipzig’s 0-5 win at Mainz.

Goals Needed at Chelsea

The striker is set to become Chelsea’s second signing for the 2020-21 season, with the Blues having already secured the signature of Hakim Ziyech – the winger sealing a £37million move from Ajax.

Even though Chelsea have persuaded Olivier Giroud to sign a new one-year contract extension, the likes of Willian and Pedro are likely to move on, so Werner’s expected arrival will offer Chelsea much more of a goal threat.

Tammy Abraham (33/1 PL Top Goalscorer) has scored 15 goals in all competitions, with Willian the next on the list with just seven. Breaking down teams at home has been an issue for Lampard’s men – in the four league games they have failed to score in at Stamford Bridge, they have been beaten.

Werner: Impressive Goal-Getter

Werner, who started his career at Stuttgart, has scored 20 or more goals in three of his four seasons with Leipzig and his goal-scoring record at international level is also impressive.

The 5ft 11in frontman has scored 11 goals in 29 appearances for Germany, having made his debut for Die Mannschaft in the summer of 2017.

Werner – who is 13/2 to be the Bundesliga’s top scorer this season – has made no secret of the fact that he would like to play in the Premier League, but many thought that would see him team up with Jurgen Klopp, especially after he described the Liverpool boss as the “best coach in the world”.

However, the stats highlight the need for Chelsea to have a heavyweight striker as the Blues have not had anyone who has scored more than 22 goals, in all competitions, since 2009-10.

That year Didier Drogba – who is fourth in the list of Chelsea all-time goal-scorers – bagged 37 times, as Chelsea claimed the Premier League and FA Cup double.
