5 of Tiger Woods’ Greatest Ever Shots

Tiger Woods has played so many tremendous shots it might be difficult to narrow them down - here is our attempt at a top five.

Tiger Woods is widely considered one of the greatest golfers of all time. The US star has won 15 major titles and jointly holds the record with Sam Snead for the most victories on the PGA Tour with 82.

Woods has achieved so much in his career and there have been countless brilliant performances down the years. Here we pick out five of his best ever shots.

Tee Shot at 16th – The Masters 2019

Woods’ most recent major success came just two years ago when he triumphed at Augusta for a fifth time. Coming 11 years after his previous major victory, it’s considered one of the greatest ever sporting comebacks. After taking the outright lead at the 15th, his stunning tee shot at the famous 16th, when his ball rolled down the slope to within a few feet of the hole, was a sight to behold.

Putt on 17th – Players Championship 2001

This 60-foot, triple breaking, downhill putt towards the water at TPC Sawgrass was simply sensational. Two or three-putting from where he was would have been considered a decent outcome but Woods had other ideas as his effort bobbed and weaved its way in. He would go on to win the tournament by just a shot from Vijay Singh.

Second Shot at 16th – Memorial Tournament 2012

When trailing Rory Sabbatini by just one shot, Woods had missed the green on the 16th at Muirfield and left himself with an extremely difficult pitch shot going downhill with a poor lie. However, he pulled off an audacious chip and roll as it perfectly dropped in for a birdie to leave Jack Nicklaus to proclaim: “I don’t think under the circumstances I’ve ever seen a better shot.” He followed it with another birdie on 18 to secure a two-shot victory.

Second Shot at 18th – Bell Canadian Open 2000

After seeing his tee shot end up in a fairway bunker on the right, Woods opted against a lay-up and instead fired his second shot over the water hazard and onto the cusp of the green. It seemed an impossible shot to pull off but such was Woods’ faith in his own ability he took it on and left everyone watching open-mouthed.

When asked about one of his greatest-ever shots, which helped secure his 24th PGA Tour title at the age of 24, Woods joked: “I hit it over the green, so it wasn’t really that good!”

Chip in at 16th – The Masters 2005

One of the most celebrated and talked-about shots of all time. Woods had ended up on the left after missing the green but pulled off an incredible chip hit, struck with just the right amount of pace and on the perfect line. The huge crowds watched on in awe as Woods’ shot eventually trickled into the hole with its last roll.

The now-iconic birdie helped set up a playoff victory as Woods went on to win at Augusta for the fourth time.
