Glorious Goodwood Races and Dates

Here’s an overview of the five days of Glorious Goodwood and what you can expect to see:

Day 1: Tuesday 28 July – Goodwood Cup Day

Day one is all about the stayers’ and the stamina-sapping Goodwood Cup over two-miles, a Group 1 contest offering a purse of ÂŁ500,000. John Gosden’s superstar Stradivarius has won the last three renewals, equalling the record of Double Trigger in doing so. After a romp in the Gold Cup at Royal Ascot in June, few will be backing against Frankie Dettori’s mount etching his name into Goodwood folklore by winning for a fourth time.

The supporting acts include a pair of Group 2 races in the Lennox Stakes and the Vintage Stakes – won last year by champion two-year-old Pinatubo, which completes a hat-trick of high quality races to kick-start Glorious Goodwood.

Start Time (GMT) Race Distance
13:10 The British European Breeders Fund EBF Fillies’ Handicap Stakek (Class 3) 1m
13:45 The Unibet You’re On Handicap Stakes (Class 2) 1m2f
14:15 The Veuve Clicquot Vintage Stakes (Class 1)(Group 2) 7f
14:45 The Qatar Lennox Stakes (Class 1) (Group 2) 7f

16:55 The British European Breeders Fund EBF Fillies’ Handicap Stakes (Class 3) 1m4f

Day 2: Wednesday 29 July – Sussex Stakes Day

The Group 1 Sussex Stakes is the main attraction on day two of Glorious Goodwood and it offers a chance for the Classic generation to take on their elders in a one-mile tussle. Amongst the most memorable of recent renewals of this great race was the 2011 ‘Duel on the Downs’ when the great Frankel dispatched reigning champion Canford Cliffs. The late Sir Henry Cecil’s charge would emerge victorious again a year later and remains the only dual winner of the Sussex Stakes.

The Group 2 Molecomb Stakes also features on Wednesday, a real speed test for the two-year-olds over the straight five furlongs that has been won by the likes of Brown Sugar, Kachy and Liberty Beach in recent times.

Start Time (GMT) Race Distance
13:10 The British European Breeders Fund EBF Fillies’ Handicap Stakes (Class 2) 1m2f
13:45 Goodwood Handicap Stakes (Class 2) 2m4½f
14:15 Handicap Stakes (Class 2) 1m4f
14:45 The Markel Insurance Molecomb Stakes (Class 1) (Group 3) 5f
15:15 The Qatar Sussex Stakes (Class 1) (Group 1) 1m
15:45 The British European Breeders Fund Alice Keppel EBF Fillies’ Conditions Stakes (Class 2) 5f
16:20 The Theo Fennell Handicap Stakes (Class 3) 7f

Day 3: Thursday 30 July – Ladies Day

Thursday is Ladies Day at Glorious Goodwood and the Group 1 Nassau Stakes was won last year Japanese sensation Deirdre under Oisin Murphy. Previous winners include Ouija Board, Midday and Minding and the overall purse is with ÂŁ600,000.

The Group 2 Lillie Langtry Stakes over a mile is relatively new (2003) and finds its most famous winner to date in Simple Verse, Ralph Beckett’s charge grabbing this prize en route to St Leger glory at Doncaster as a three-year-old. The Group 2 Richmond Stakes is an integral part of the Glorious Goodwood experience and is a fast-paced 6f dash for two-year-old colts.

Start Time (GMT) Race Distance
13:10 The Mirabeau En Provence Handicap Stakes (Class 3) 5f
13:45 Handicap Stakes (Class 2) 1m2f
14:15 The Qatar Richmond Stakes (Class 1) (Group 2) 6f
14:45 The John Pearce Racing Gordon Stakes (Class 1) (Group 3) 1m4f
15:15 The Qatar Nassau Stakes (Class 1) (Group 1) 1m2f

16:20 The British European Breeders Fund EBF Maiden Fillies’ Stakes (Class 2) 7f
16:55 The Duncton Nursery Handicap Stakes (Class 2) 5f

Day 4: Friday 31 July – King George Day

Speed is perhaps more routinely associated with motorsport in the Goodwood area but nothing will diminish the raw power of the blistering Battaash when he attempts to win a fourth successive King George Stakes on day four of the meeting.

Charlie Hills’ speedball has established himself as the fastest horse in the world and this race has been his for three years on the trot. Can anything keep up with him?

The seven-race Friday card at Goodwood includes no less than four at group-race level and will be brimming with star quality.

16:20 Nursery Handicap Stakes (Class 2) 6f
16:55 The British European Breeders Fund EBF Maiden Fillies’ Stakes (Class 4) 6f

Day 5: Saturday 1 August – Stewards’ Cup Day

The highlight on the final afternoon is the cavalry charge that is the Stewards’ Cup over six-furlongs. The tough handicap routinely attracts a bumper entry and has a first prize in excess of ÂŁ155,000.

The mercurial Frankie Dettori has won this tough prize twice since 2015 on board Magical Memory and Lancelot Du Lac.

Also on Saturday is the Group 2 Gordon Stakes over a mile and a half, a contest that iconic trainer Sir Michael Stoute has won a landmark ten times in his career.

Goodwood Racecourse

Goodwood remains one of the iconic Flat racing circuits in Britain, more than 200 years after racing first took place on the famous Sussex Downs. The ‘Glorious Goodwood Festival’ grew throughout the 19th century with King Edward VII, a regular attendee, famously dubbing it “a garden party with racing tacked on”.

In modern times, the midsummer festival regularly attracts more than 100,000 racegoers across its five days when it is at the centre of European thoroughbred racing. The racecourse offers stunning views out across the Sussex Downs to sea on England’s south coast.

Enclosures and Dress Code

Goodwood during the Glorious Festival is a hive of high-end fashion and style for ladies and gents alike. Dress to impress is the clear message for patrons ahead of their afternoon on the Downs where ‘The Goodwood Look’ is fabled and the racecourse offers a range of fashion tips and hints.

Richmond Enclosure

The most stylish and exclusive enclosure at Goodwood. Gentlemen are required to wear a jacket accompanied by a tie, cravat or polo-neck sweater. Ladies meanwhile must dress stylishly but with a relaxed feel. A floaty dress or an elegant top and trouser/skirt combination will suit.

Gordon Enclosure

The Gordon Enclosure poses a slightly more relaxed feel. Gentlemen are encouraged to wear a jacket and tie, while both ladies and gents are urged to dress to impress going to the races. Given the afternoons can be searing in the summer son, tailored shorts are an option for the gents.

Lennox Enclosure

The most relaxed enclosure at Goodwood, the Lennox has no formal dress code, though racegoers are encouraged to – and very often do – dress up for the event, especially when it comes to the Glorious Goodwood Festival.
