Very few sporting events resonate across a spectrum quite as broad as that reached by the Grand National at Aintree. It is routinely regarded as a race like no other, known as ‘The People’s Race’ and famed for being the most famous and iconic steeplechase in the world.

The race itself comes as the culmination of three days of top-class action on the Merseyside turf, as the sporting city of Liverpool is engulfed by racing in the spring sunshine. This 2020 Grand National Festival is due to run from Thursday April 8th – Saturday April 10th.

Aintree is a stones’ throw from Liverpool’s rejuvenated city centre and the magnificent modern-day racecourse and facilities are a match for anything in Britain.

Grand National Festival Races and Dates

The Grand National Festival runs from Thursday 8th April – Saturday 10th April 2021 at Aintree Racecourse.

Day 1: Liverpool’s Day Thursday 8th April 2021

The opening day is billed as a relaxed raceday experience with a mix of high quality racing and easy-going entertainment to celebrate the host city of Liverpool. Making the Grand National Festival a central part of the city’s regeneration strategy has pushed a spotlight on Aintree like never before.

Racing from Aintree at this Festival is watched in 100 different countries and the opening day is all about showcasing the people of Liverpool and their thriving home city.

Day 1 features a quartet of Grade 1 races to satisfy any racing fan, including the Aintree Hurdle, The Bowl and the Anniversary 4YO Juvenile Hurdle.

Day 2: Ladies Day Friday 9th April 2021

Aintree’s Ladies Day is full of colour, style and fashion and celebrates the individuality and creativity of the thousands of racegoers that descend on the track. All things style and fashion are in the spotlight, which they share with another high-class seven-race card on the turf.

Again there are four Grade 1 races to savour, with the Top Novices’ Hurdle kicking off the top-level action. The Mildmay Novices’ Chase and the Sefton Novices’ Hurdle are also up for grabs, with ÂŁ500,000 in prize money in the Grade 1s alone.

The feature race on day two at Aintree is the Melling Chase – carrying its name from the road that intersects the racecourse.

Day 3: Grand National Day Saturday 10th April 2021

The main course is served on Saturday evening, with The Grand National now positioned in a tea-time slot that maximises a television audience in Britain and so much further afield.

The great race is rightly recognised as a display of endeavour, ability, talent and true determination – both equine and human – and it routinely pulls at the heartstrings with fairytale stories of how and where the winners have come from for their moment of destiny, in front of a global audience. The Grand National is an unrivalled British sporting tradition.

As with the other days of the festival, Grade 1 action is in plentiful supply with the Mersey Novices’ Hurdle, the Maghull Novices’ Chase and the Liverpool Stayers’ Hurdle all preceding the biggest race in the calendar.

Aintree Racecourse

Aintree is the pride of Merseyside in racing terms. This vast, panoramic racecourse is maintained to the highest standards and the Grand National Festival is routinely noted for the pristine condition of the turf. The famous Aintree fences are unique and unmistakable in the racing world.

In modern times, Aintree has undergone a significant redevelopment and upgrade of its facilities. This ensures that racegoers now get to sample a world class experience on their visit that matches the action on the course.
