It’s great to finally be at Ascot! I have three rides today; one for Andrew Balding, one for Mark Johnston and finally for Charlie Fellowes
1:15 Ascot: Golden Gates Handicap
Thankfully, we have got a run in the opening race today! There were a couple of non-runners due to the rain meaning we have got in as first reserve. I’ve never ridden BRONZE RIVER before but the yard couldn’t have started the season any better with Kameko winning the 2000 Guineas and a Royal winner yesterday!
Bronze River is a horse that has proven stamina unlike many of today’s rivals and with the rain that has fallen, that is a huge positive. I am happy with my draw as you don’t want to be too wide or too near the rail on the round course. He looks to have a solid each-way chance.
4:10 Ascot: Britannia Stakes Handicap
I ride OVERWRITE for Mark Johnston in this competitive mile handicap. Going off the opening two days, my draw of 22 is a positive but I think the overnight rainfall will mean that there won’t be as much of a bias and the low numbers will be more competitive. He was a very impressive winner down at Brighton last year and I hope he’ll come on a bundle for his run at Newcastle.
4:40 Sandringham Stakes Handicap
This is the race I won last year for Charlie Fellowes on Thanks Be and we team up again today hoping for a repeat success! I think that ONASSIS has a live chance here – this has been the plan for a long time and despite us being unable to get a prep run into her, she should relish the straight mile at Ascot. Being drawn 1 might put you off but as previously mentioned, the rain should even out the supposed draw bias. Two of the winners of this race in recent years have been drawn 1 so here’s hoping the winner will come from that stall again today!
Stay safe and good luck,
